How the AI Borrowing Binge Is Pushing Up U.S. Treasury Yields What's Actually Happening Since 2025, the handful of companies building the physical backbone of AI, mainly Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle (often called "hyperscalers"), have shifted from funding data centers mostly out of cash to funding them with debt. Bond sales by this group roughly doubled between 2025 and the first half of 2026, and Wall Street estimates put total AI-linked debt issuance across the wider tech ecosystem somewhere between $300 billion and $570 billion for 2026 alone. That's the "AI borrowing binge." The harder question is how a wave of corporate borrowing to build data centers ends up moving the yield on a completely different instrument, the U.S. Treasury bond. Treasury yields are set by supply and demand in the world's largest bond market, but they respond to more than Treasury issuance alone. A few distinct mechanisms link private AI borrowing to public borrowing costs, and they don't all pull with the same strength. Competing for the Same Pool of Money The most direct channel is what economists call "duration supply." Data centers last for decades, so the companies financing them lean toward long-maturity bonds, 10-year, 30-year, even a rare 100-year note. Every dollar of that long-dated corporate debt is a dollar that might otherwise have bought a long-dated Treasury instead. Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas found that AI-related investment-grade issuance could add hundreds of billions of dollars of 10-year-equivalent duration risk to the bond market, on top of what the Treasury itself sells to fund the deficit. When investors have more high-quality, long-dated paper to pick from, they can demand a bit more yield across the board, Treasuries included, to lock up money for that long. Bank of America economists have estimated this "crowding out" effect added roughly 0.3 percentage points to the 10-year Treasury yield this year. What Faster Growth Means for Fed Policy AI capital spending has become a real driver of measured GDP growth, and that changes how bond investors read the Federal Reserve. If AI investment keeps the economy running hotter than expected, the case for near-term rate cuts weakens, and markets price in a higher expected path for short-term rates over a bond's life. Since long-term yields are, in part, a weighted average of expected future short rates, stronger growth expectations tied to the AI buildout show up directly in the 10-year yield. There's an inflation angle too. IMF economists have flagged that AI-driven wealth effects, along with the heavy electricity demand from data centers, could add to price pressure, which pushes inflation expectations, and therefore nominal yields, higher still. Term Premium, Fiscal Strain, and Risk Appetite Treasury yields split into two pieces: the path investors expect for short-term rates, and the "term premium," the extra compensation demanded for the risk of holding a long-term bond instead of rolling over short-term ones, as modeled by the New York Fed's ACM framework. That premium spent years near zero or negative and has turned solidly positive again. AI debt is one of several forces pushing it up. A bigger supply of competing long-dated paper raises uncertainty about who absorbs future issuance, and that uncertainty compounds a federal deficit running near $2 trillion a year against a national debt that just crossed $40 trillion. When investors watch two large borrowers, Washington and Silicon Valley, lean into the long end of the curve at the same time, they tend to price in extra compensation for the risk that supply outruns demand at any given yield. Correlation, Causation, and What Else Belongs in the Picture None of this makes AI borrowing the main story. Reuters and the Globe and Mail have both noted that technology issuance is still a modest slice, roughly 13 percent, of total U.S. corporate bond supply, well behind financial firms. Yields have climbed in Japan, the UK, and across Europe too, where hyperscaler debt plays almost no role, which points to shared global forces: inflation stuck above target, uncertainty around a new Fed chair's approach, and worsening fiscal positions in many countries at once. Morningstar and Vanguard analysts describe the AI capex boom as reinforcing an existing move in yields rather than single-handedly causing it. The timing overlap between the debt wave and higher yields is suggestive, not proof. Isolating the AI-specific effect means comparing yield behavior across countries and against corporate-spread data directly, which is roughly what Dallas Fed researchers and bank economists have tried to do.
