Why "Whole-Child Development" Matters More Than You Might Think Choosing a preschool can feel overwhelming. Class sizes, curriculum philosophies, teacher ratios — every detail seems to carry weight, and it should. The early years are when so much foundational learning happens, not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and physically. At Stepping Stone World, a licensed preschool and day care, that foundation is the starting point for everything we do. A Curriculum Built Around Curiosity We follow a HighScope-style curriculum, organized around weekly themes. The HighScope approach is rooted in the idea that children need active involvement with people, materials, and ideas — and that adults and children learn together, side by side, rather than in a one-directional teaching model. In practice, this means children are encouraged to make their own choices about materials and activities, while teachers support and guide that exploration. We also build in free choice time, during which teachers play alongside children to better understand their interests — insight that then shapes how themes and curriculum evolve over time. Hands-On, Always Much of the learning at Stepping Stone World happens through doing. Finger painting, play-dough, arts and crafts — these aren't just fun activities, they're opportunities for exploration, stimulation of ideas, and creative thinking. Most children learn best through hands-on experience with people, materials, events, and ideas, and our program is designed around that principle. Academics Blended With Play Rather than treating academics and play as separate tracks, our curriculum blends the two. Through play, children build social, interaction, and language skills — much of their ability to share and cooperate develops naturally through playing in a group. This is whole-child development in action: cognitive, social/emotional, creative, and physical growth happening together, not in isolation. Small Classes, Real Attention One of the most meaningful differentiators in early childhood education is the teacher-to-student ratio. At Stepping Stone World, we maintain a 1:9 teacher-to-student ratio with small class sizes, which allows our staff to focus on the individual learning styles and needs of each child — recognizing that every child's pace and strengths are different. Who We Serve Stepping Stone World welcomes children from age 2 through the entry of first grade, with both full-time and part-time program options available, so families can find a schedule that fits their needs.
