Apple's September 2026 Event: iPhone Duo Arrives, Foldables Face Their Toughest Test What Apple Announced Apple held its "Surprise and Shine" keynote on September 9, 2026, at Apple Park, the first major product event hosted by new CEO John Ternus. The headline was the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone: a 5.4-inch cover screen opens into a 7.6-inch inner display, wrapped in a titanium frame with Ceramic Shield and an IP68 water and dust rating. It starts at $1,999, runs on the new A20 Pro chip and C2 modem, and goes on sale October 23. Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max (also on A20 Pro, starting around $1,199), Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and AirPods 5 with standard noise cancellation. There's no standard iPhone 18 this year; Apple pushed that model to spring 2027 alongside a cheaper iPhone 18e. iOS 27 ships September 14, and the Duo arrives with its own build, iOS 27.1, tuned for the folding hardware. Why Foldables Haven't Caught On Despite seven years on the market since Samsung's original Galaxy Fold, foldables still make up only a small slice of global smartphone shipments, somewhere around 2 to 3 percent, according to research firms including Counterpoint and IDC. A few things keep holding the category back. Price is the biggest one: book-style foldables typically sell for $1,450 to $1,800 or more, well above flagship slab phones, and surveys consistently find cost cited as the top barrier by would-be buyers. Durability runs a close second. Folding hinges and plastic-based cover layers have been prone to creasing, dust ingress, and screen damage over repeated folds, and even after years of engineering fixes, many buyers stay wary of a phone that bends. Software hasn't always kept pace either. Apps built for a single rectangular screen can look stretched or awkwardly cropped on a folding display, and the multitasking features meant to justify the bigger screen aren't always well supported. Add in the extra bulk and weight compared with regular phones, and it's easy to see why most buyers have stuck with familiar, cheaper, tougher slab designs. Why Apple Is Betting on iPhone Duo Anyway Apple waited years longer than Samsung, Huawei, and others to enter this category, which suggests it was deliberately working through the problems above before shipping anything. On durability, Apple built the Duo around a titanium frame, Ceramic Shield glass, and a custom hinge with more than 100 parts designed to keep the crease nearly invisible while still earning an IP68 rating, directly targeting the dust and damage concerns that have dogged rivals. On software, Apple redesigned iOS around the fold rather than stretching an existing interface across it, adapting controls, the dock, and app behavior to how the phone is angled or opened. There's a business logic here too. The foldable segment is forecast to grow around 20 percent in 2026, and analysts expect Apple's entry alone to pull in a meaningful share of that premium tier, the way the iPhone Air and Pro Max have carved out space in other parts of the lineup. A $1,999 price also lets Apple claim new ground at the very top of its range, pitched as much as a productivity device as a phone, with Apple Pencil support coming later this year. None of this guarantees mainstream success. It's Apple's bet that its ecosystem, software control, and manufacturing scale can succeed where seven years of Android foldables have mostly found a niche, loyal audience instead of a mass one. What's Next That's the shape of it so far, based on Apple's own announcement and early hands-on reporting.
