Tanker Struck by Projectile in the Strait of Hormuz Amid Iran-US Conflict What Is Confirmed On the night of July 6–7, 2026, the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO) said a tanker had been hit by an unidentified projectile about eight nautical miles off Limah, Oman, in the Strait of Hormuz. A fire broke out in the engine room. Reuters, citing shipping sources, named the vessel as the Qatari LNG carrier Al Rekayyat. A second tanker, Saudi-flagged and carrying crude, was reportedly damaged around the same time. No casualties were reported. Qatar's foreign ministry said publicly that Iran had struck its tanker, and US Central Command later said its strikes on Iran were a response to "Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels" in the strait. Iran never directly claimed the attack. Iranian state television instead reported that a vessel had ignored warnings, while unnamed US officials told Axios that Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at least two missiles at commercial shipping that night. All of this happened inside a larger war between the US, Israel, and Iran that began February 28, 2026, just weeks after a June 17 memorandum of understanding meant to cool things down in the strait. Likely Motives, Not Confirmed Fact Nobody has independently confirmed why this happened, and the explanations on offer don't fully agree. One theory: Iran was enforcing its demand that ships stick to its designated "northern" route through Hormuz, and punished vessels for using a US-protected southern corridor instead. Another: the strike was a pressure tactic, timed to tense negotiations with Washington. A Tehran-based analyst told Al Jazeera the ship might simply have drifted into an area where Iranian crews were clearing mines, an accident rather than a deliberate hit. A separate regional security researcher pushed back on that idea, telling Al Jazeera the pattern of explosions looked more like missile fire than mines. Iran, for its part, keeps denying it targets civilian shipping at all. Regional Security and Shipping Fallout This attack is one entry in a long list. Repeated tanker strikes since February have choked traffic through Hormuz and forced the International Maritime Organization to help evacuate stranded seafarers. War-risk marine insurance has climbed from around 0.25% of a ship's hull value before the war to somewhere between 3% and 10% now, according to insurance broker Marsh and S&P Global. For a large tanker, that's millions of extra dollars per voyage. Gulf states, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, have called Iran's strikes on their ships violations of international law. Oil Markets and Diplomacy Brent crude jumped 3–6% in the hours after the July attacks, CNBC reported, and Washington separately pulled a license that had let Iran sell oil. The strike also strained the June 17 memorandum of understanding, which had only just reopened the strait to a trickle of traffic. Qatar and other Gulf governments want Hormuz reopened with no conditions attached. Talks between the US and Iran, covering both the strait and Iran's nuclear program, keep starting and stalling. Escalation Risks and What's Next CENTCOM pointed to this attack, among others, as a reason it resumed strikes on Iranian targets, which shows how fast one incident on the water can turn into a much bigger military exchange. Who actually fired on the tanker is still contested. Qatar says Iran did it. Anonymous US officials back that up. Iran hasn't claimed it.
