Iran-US Clashes Intensify as Oil Tops $100 a Barrel A Conflict Now in Its Seventh Month The confrontation between the US and Iran, which began after US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in late February, has entered a volatile new phase this week. Reports say the US military struck five Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island, Iran's main export hub, on Tuesday night. Iran said it retaliated by hitting American vessels and roughly ten ships in the Gulf, and separately fired ballistic missiles toward Jordan. Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen reportedly struck energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including a refinery at Jazan. Casualty figures from the latest exchanges haven't been independently confirmed. Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters The strait, a narrow passage between Iran and Oman, is the world's single most important oil chokepoint. Before the conflict, roughly a fifth of global oil consumption, about 20 million barrels a day, moved through it, along with a large share of the world's liquefied natural gas. Since the war began, US officials and shipping-intelligence firms have offered conflicting estimates of how much oil is still flowing, but transit volumes are reported to be well below pre-war levels amid Iranian warnings, ship seizures and reported mine-laying. Crude Crosses $100 as Markets React Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose to $100.72 a barrel on Wednesday, its first move above $100 since late July. US crude climbed to roughly $95.25 a barrel. Analysts point to the latest tanker strikes, uncertainty over actual flows through Hormuz, and Houthi attacks on Saudi refining capacity as the main drivers. Brent is reported to be up more than 60% so far this year. US gasoline and diesel prices have also risen, with the national gas average near $4.22 a gallon and diesel at a record high, per AAA figures cited in market coverage. What to Watch Next Analysts are watching a few threads: whether US-Iran talks over control of the strait, which reportedly broke down over Iran's demand to set passage terms, can resume; a possible Iran-Oman arrangement floated this week for a temporary safe shipping corridor; and whether further strikes on tankers or Gulf infrastructure push prices higher still. Both the military and market pictures remain fluid, so shipping-volume, casualty and price figures should be treated as provisional pending official confirmation.
