These birds are adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, where water is scarce. To survive in such harsh conditions, they have developed an interesting strategy for obtaining water. During the early morning or late afternoon, chestnut-bellied sandgrouse gather in large flocks and fly several kilometers to reach water holes or temporary water bodies. They do this primarily to drink, but also to wet their belly feathers. Their belly feathers can soak up water like a sponge, and the male sandgrouse will then return to the nest to provide moisture to their chicks. This behavior is crucial for the survival of their offspring, especially during the hot and dry seasons when water sources are limited. However, visiting water holes also poses risks for the sandgrouse, as they become vulnerable to predation during these communal visits. Therefore, they have developed a sophisticated system of surveillance and communication to ensure their safety while drinking. They maintain a vigilant watch for predators while taking turns drinking, and if a threat is spotted, they quickly take flight to safety. Overall, the chestnut-bellied sandgrouse's behavior around water holes showcases their remarkable adaptations for survival in arid environments and their complex social dynamics.
