Indian Pond Heron : Breeding Vs Non Breeding Plumage #IndianPondHeron #Plumage #Herons The Indian Pond Heron (Ardeola grayii) is a wading bird found across the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia. Like many birds, it exhibits differences in plumage between breeding and non-breeding seasons. During the breeding season, Indian Pond Herons develop striking breeding plumage. Males typically display brighter colors and more distinct markings compared to females. Their breeding plumage often includes a rich chestnut hue on the head, neck, and breast, along with elongated feathers or plumes on the back. This breeding attire is used for courtship displays and to attract mates. In contrast, outside the breeding season, Indian Pond Herons transition to non-breeding or basic plumage. This plumage is generally more subdued and lacks the intense colors and elaborate features seen during breeding. The chestnut tones diminish, and the bird appears more uniformly gray or brownish-gray in coloration. The distinct markings and plumes characteristic of breeding plumage are often absent or reduced during the non-breeding season. These seasonal plumage changes serve various purposes, including camouflage, mate attraction, and species recognition. They allow birds to adapt to changing environmental conditions and reproductive cycles throughout the year.
