Spreading its wings wide can also increase surface area and drag, aiding in slowing down. This is similar to how a parachute works. By spreading its wings fully, the stork increases the air resistance and slows down gradually. By adjusting the angle of its wings, a Painted Stork can increase air resistance, effectively slowing down. When the wings are angled upward, they catch more air and create more drag, which helps to decelerate the bird.
