Trump Hails "Truly Great Friendship" With Xi as Washington Summit Opens A warm welcome, few details President Donald Trump on Thursday hailed the "truly great friendship" he has forged with Xi Jinping as the Chinese leader began his highly anticipated state visit. Xi came with goodwill gestures. He announced that China will invite 100,000 American youth to come to his country for studies and exchanges in the next five years and that China will send two pandas to the zoo in Atlanta. The leaders met Thursday afternoon for around three hours at the White House during the first day of a two-day summit. Afterward, Trump called it a "great meeting" but did not answer questions on the substance of the talks. During the state dinner, Xi said they "reached common understanding on many issues." Trade truce, jets and farm goods Confirmed: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the economic truce that was scheduled to end on Nov. 10 is going to be extended until Jan. 10. He was candid about the limits. He said he didn't know whether a bigger deal can be done or whether the two sides will just roll the current deal, adding that China has not met "some deliverables" stipulated by the truce. Under the May agreement, China committed to purchase at least $17 billion a year in U.S. agricultural products and approve an initial purchase of 200 Boeing aircraft. Progress on jets is partial. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said roughly 140 aircraft were in a "good state." Analysis: CSIS's Scott Kennedy said the short extension suggests the U.S. is unsatisfied with China's offers and wants to keep the heat on. Rare earths and Taiwan Greer said the two countries are still negotiating the potential extension of a rare earths truce that would ensure continued flow of Chinese rare earth products for the U.S. American officials have complained that China has not upheld its end of the bargain. Taiwan is more delicate. Trump said he was holding off on final approval for a record-breaking $14 billion arms package and described arms sales to Taiwan as a "very good negotiating chip" with China. Xi didn't mention Taiwan publicly. Speculation: Reuters, citing unnamed sources, reported Xi is expected to press Trump to halt American arms sales to Taiwan, and there's no sign Trump has agreed. Iran war raises the stakes The visit comes as the U.S. continues a months-long naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off an estimated 12% of China's oil imports. Trump told reporters he would discuss the Iran war with the Chinese leader. Analysis: China is Iran's largest trading partner, and Trump may ask Xi to play a part in peace talks with Tehran, analysts say. Some experts argued earlier this year that Beijing will require concessions from the US, likely over Taiwan, if it were to aid in resolving the crisis. No such trade-off has been announced. AI: rivals looking for guardrails Xi said the two countries had a responsibility to ensure that humans always operate AI. Before the summit, the two sides discussed setting up an alert system for AI incidents, according to Bessent. Trump signaled caution on sweeping rules, writing that he wanted to "leave it exactly where it is" on what he calls super intelligence. Outlook: the friendly tone may steady ties for now.
