On LinkedIn's AI skill-penetration index, India ranks first globally, meaning AI skills show up in Indian professional profiles roughly three times the world average. Add a fast-growing base of over 20 million GitHub developers, and you get a pipeline few countries can match. Startups and Product Innovation Indian AI startups are moving from experimentation to deployment. A Bain & Company survey (with Microsoft and IAMAI) found roughly 80% of Indian enterprises already have at least one AI model in production, with technology providers embedding AI/ML into products at a higher rate than global peers. Sectors like fintech, SaaS, and communications are leading adoption, and India's cost-effective, cloud-native engineering culture has made it a hub for building and scaling AI tools rather than just consuming them. Government and Industry Push Policy has caught up with momentum. The IndiaAI Mission, run by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, is funding compute infrastructure, datasets, and large-scale skilling programs, while the National Education Policy 2020 pushes AI into university curricula. NASSCOM-led skilling platforms have trained over a million learners in AI-adjacent skills. This culminated in India hosting the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, drawing leaders from over 80 countries — a signal of how central India now considers itself to global AI development. Putting the "40%" Figure in Context The claim that India contributes "40%" of global AI R&D doesn't hold up against primary data, and readers should treat it skeptically. What credible sources actually show is more specific and more modest: India accounted for roughly 20–24% of GitHub AI project contributions in recent years (Stanford AI Index), and about 16% of the global AI talent pool per Bain & Company's 2022 study — figures that themselves vary by methodology (an IIM Ahmedabad–BCG study put India's share of AI professionals at just 4.5%). India is unambiguously a top-two or top-three contributor by talent and developer activity, but no major index attributes 40% of overall AI research output to any single country outside the US and China combined. The Road Ahead India's challenge now is retention, not talent creation. Stanford's 2026 Index flagged India's AI talent outflow as the steepest of any country tracked, and India's private-sector R&D spending still trails advanced economies.
