  Portrait Photography: Capturing More Than a Face A portrait isn’t just a photo of a person. It’s a photo about a person. Every choice—angle, lighting, background, expression—tells part of their story. Great portrait photography is about presence. Not just how someone looks, but who they are . What makes a portrait powerful? Connection : Eye contact can create tension or intimacy. Looking away can suggest thought, mystery, or vulnerability. Emotion : Even subtle expressions can reveal mood—pride, joy, sadness, fear, calm. Environment : A cluttered room or a blank wall. Each says something different. Light : Harsh side light can create drama. Soft window light brings quiet detail. Think about Steve McCurry’s “Afghan Girl.” It’s not the sharpness or color—it’s the gaze . You feel something. That’s the goal. Try this with your portraits: Use natural light near a window. Keep the background simple and clean. Focus on the  eyes . Speak to your subject during the shoot. Build comfort. Shoot candid in-between moments—they often hold the most truth. Ask yourself: What does this portrait say about the person? How would they want to be remembered? What do you feel when you look at it? Portrait photography is a collaboration. The subject brings presence. You bring perspective. Together, you make something that lasts.
