Planets in Vedic Astrology In Vedic astrology, the planets, known as "Grahas," hold a significant role in influencing human lives and the events of the world. Unlike the Western understanding of planets as mere celestial bodies, Vedic astrology views Grahas as divine entities with consciousness, influencing the karmic patterns of individuals based on their birth charts (Janam Kundali). The nine primary planets, or Navagrahas, include the seven visible celestial bodies—Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), and Saturn (Shani)—as well as two shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu, which are mathematical points signifying the lunar nodes.   Sun (Surya) The Sun is the king of planets and represents the soul (Atman), vitality, authority, and self-esteem. It governs the zodiac sign Leo and signifies fatherhood, leadership, and creativity. A strong Sun in the chart brings confidence and energy, while a weak Sun may lead to ego issues or lack of direction.   Moon (Chandra) The Moon governs the mind, emotions, and intuition. It rules the zodiac sign Cancer and is closely associated with nurturing, motherhood, and mental stability. A strong Moon enhances emotional resilience, while a weak Moon can lead to mental unrest or mood swings.   Mars (Mangal) Mars is the planet of energy, courage, and aggression. A favorable Mars grants determination and leadership qualities, while an afflicted Mars can cause anger, impulsiveness, or conflicts.   Mercury (Budh) Mercury is associated with intellect, communication, and analytical ability. A strong Mercury enhances eloquence and logical thinking, while a weak Mercury may result in indecisiveness or communication issues.   Jupiter (Guru) Jupiter, the planet of wisdom and expansion, is considered the most benefic planet in Vedic astrology. It rules Sagittarius and Pisces, symbolizing knowledge, spirituality, wealth, and growth. A strong Jupiter brings prosperity and ethical values, whereas a weak Jupiter can result in financial struggles or lack of wisdom.   Venus (Shukra) Venus governs love, beauty, luxury, and relationships. It rules Taurus and Libra and is linked with creativity, romance, and material pleasures. A favorable Venus enhances artistic talents and harmony in relationships, while an afflicted Venus may lead to indulgence or relationship issues.   Saturn (Shani) Saturn is the planet of discipline, karma, and perseverance. It rules Capricorn and Aquarius and represents challenges, hard work, and spiritual growth. A well-placed Saturn rewards patience and responsibility, while a weak Saturn can cause delays, hardships, or detachment.   Rahu and Ketu Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets with no physical form, representing the north and south lunar nodes. Rahu symbolizes material desires, obsession, and unconventional thinking, while Ketu represents detachment, spirituality, and past life karma. These nodes play a crucial role in shaping spiritual evolution and life challenges. In Vedic astrology, the interplay of these planets across the twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses of the birth chart forms the basis of astrological predictions. Their positioning, conjunctions, and aspects determine various facets of an individual's life, including health, career, relationships, and spiritual growth.
