Russia Rejects Black Sea Ceasefire, Citing "No Grounds for Half-Measures"

Key uncertainties include whether Russia links any shipping truce to sanctions relief, as it did in 2025 talks; whether Turkish mediation gains enough leverage to bring Moscow to the table; and whether continued Ukrainian strikes on Novorossiysk shift Russia's calculus. For now, Moscow's public stance leaves little room for near-term de-escalation at sea.

Why Loading "From Inside" Hormuz Matters The distinction matters because Saudi Arabia spent much of the past several months routing oil around the strait rather than through it &mdash; sending crude overland via the East-West pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, or arranging transfers outside the contested waterway. Hormuz remains the world's most important oil chokepoint: at its narrowest point it is only about 21 miles wide, yet roughly a fifth to a quarter of global seaborne oil trade, and a comparable share of liquefied natural gas, normally passes through it, with few viable alternative routes for that volume. Tankers actually loading at Gulf terminals like Ras Tanura signal that shippers see the direct route as viable again, and the extra barrels help ease a shortage of heavier crude grades used to refuel ships and produce diesel and gasoline.
