A Winking Oriental Scops Owl #OrientalScopsOwl

Owls often appear to "wink" due to their unique eye structure and behavior. Unlike humans, owls cannot move their eyes within their sockets. Instead, they have large, tubular eyes that are fixed in place, allowing them to see a wide range without moving their heads. However, they do have a flexible neck that can rotate up to 270 degrees, allowing them to compensate for their immobile eyes.

When an owl appears to wink, it may be because it's blinking or closing one eye momentarily. This behavior can serve various purposes, including clearing debris from the eye, adjusting to light changes, or signaling to other owls. Additionally, owls may close one eye as a form of communication or to convey a particular mood or intention.

Barn Owl Feeding

A barn Owl feeding on a rodent. 

I got an opportunity to document a barn owl pair @lifeatwoods, shamshabad during Oct 2022 till Jan 2023.

During this period, I could capture this pair nesting, feeding chicks and other behaviour. The pair used to feed chicks with various types of rodents, bats, and swallow birds. 

This is one moment during that documentation.
