In many bird species, including the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), there are typically subtle differences in appearance between males and females, a phenomenon known as sexual dimorphism. However, in the case of the Common Kingfisher, sexual dimorphism is minimal, and it can be challenging to differentiate between males and females based solely on appearance. 

The key to telling the difference between a male and female kingfisher is the color of the beak. The Common Kingfisher male's beak is all black in color, while the female's lower beak has an orange-red color with a black tip.
