Aligning the fish: Birds have specialized tongues and beaks that help them manipulate food items. By tossing the fish, they may be trying to align it in a way that makes it easier to swallow headfirst or in a specific orientation.

Removing scales: Certain fish have scales that could be irritating or hard to digest. By tossing the fish, birds might be trying to shake off or remove some of these scales before eating it.

Avoiding choking: Swallowing large fish whole could be a choking hazard for birds. Tossing the fish multiple times might be a way to reduce the risk of choking by breaking the fish into smaller portions.

Attracting mates or chicks: In some bird species, feeding behaviors are part of courtship rituals or parental feeding strategies. Tossing food might be a way to attract mates or demonstrate food-catching skills to their chicks.

Film Composition Explained

With their origins in fine art, the elements of composition in film provide a foundation for visual storytelling. In this video, the latest in our Shot List series, we’re going to explore cinematic composition and its seemingly endless possibilities. 

What is Composition?

Composition is simply how you arrange the elements of your image. This includes your subject and the space surrounding them, the size and shapes, the color and contrast, the leading lines created to help guide the viewer’s eye, and so many more. By understanding the elements of composition in film, you can execute your visual storytelling on a whole new level. 

Elements of Composition

There are many “rules” and guidelines when it comes to composition. But no matter which of these composition techniques you use, the goal is always to understand what you want the viewer to take away from a particular image. Creating focal points is a highly valuable skill so that you can guide the viewer’s attention where you want it. This can be done with “leading lines,” creating shapes, the rule of thirds, and even using color and contrast.

There are also framing and composition techniques like “frame within a frame” that helps isolate your main subject. Another technique is the Golden Ratio which uses a pattern we find everywhere in nature to create a sense of balance.

We can also look at how to use depth in the image, creating a sense of space using foreground, middle and background elements. And, of course, the angle of the camera creates its own bias and influence on how the audience perceives a composition.

Learning all of these elements of composition in film at once is certainly a daunting task. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to operate on a more intuitive level where film composition becomes second nature.

Owls often appear to "wink" due to their unique eye structure and behavior. Unlike humans, owls cannot move their eyes within their sockets. Instead, they have large, tubular eyes that are fixed in place, allowing them to see a wide range without moving their heads. However, they do have a flexible neck that can rotate up to 270 degrees, allowing them to compensate for their immobile eyes.

When an owl appears to wink, it may be because it's blinking or closing one eye momentarily. This behavior can serve various purposes, including clearing debris from the eye, adjusting to light changes, or signaling to other owls. Additionally, owls may close one eye as a form of communication or to convey a particular mood or intention.

Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker Feeding Behavior #WoodpeckerFeeding

The Black-rumped Flameback, also known as the Lesser Golden-backed Woodpecker (Dinopium benghalense), is a species of woodpecker found in South Asia. 

Their diet primarily consists of insects, larvae, ants, termites, and occasionally fruits. They use their strong bills to drill into the bark of trees in search of insects and larvae. Like other woodpeckers, Black-rumped Flamebacks use their powerful beaks to hammer on trees, creating holes to access insects beneath the bark. They have a distinctive drumming sound, which is often used for communication as well as to locate insects within the wood.

When a small bird like Indian White-eye catches a caterpillar and hits it against a branch repeatedly, it's likely engaging in a behavior known as "anting" or "anting behavior." This behavior involves rubbing or hitting insects, such as caterpillars, against surfaces like branches or leaves.

Birds may engage in anting to coat themselves in formic acid, a substance produced by ants when they're disturbed. Formic acid has insecticidal properties and can help birds rid themselves of parasites like mites and lice.

By hitting the caterpillar against a branch, the bird may be trying to immobilize or break apart its prey to make it easier to swallow. 

 Some caterpillars have defensive mechanisms, such as noxious chemicals or spines, that can make them unpalatable to predators. By hitting the caterpillar against a hard surface, the bird may be attempting to remove or neutralize these defenses before consuming it.

Anting behavior is fascinating and demonstrates the diverse ways in which birds adapt their behavior to interact with their environment and prey.

The Indian Pond Heron (Ardeola grayii) is a wading bird found across the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia. Like many birds, it exhibits differences in plumage between breeding and non-breeding seasons.

During the breeding season, Indian Pond Herons develop striking breeding plumage. Males typically display brighter colors and more distinct markings compared to females. Their breeding plumage often includes a rich chestnut hue on the head, neck, and breast, along with elongated feathers or plumes on the back. This breeding attire is used for courtship displays and to attract mates.

In contrast, outside the breeding season, Indian Pond Herons transition to non-breeding or basic plumage. This plumage is generally more subdued and lacks the intense colors and elaborate features seen during breeding. The chestnut tones diminish, and the bird appears more uniformly gray or brownish-gray in coloration. The distinct markings and plumes characteristic of breeding plumage are often absent or reduced during the non-breeding season.

These seasonal plumage changes serve various purposes, including camouflage, mate attraction, and species recognition. They allow birds to adapt to changing environmental conditions and reproductive cycles throughout the year.

A Tricolored munia was observed using it's right wing more than the left wing  when it want to turn around to feed. Not sure whether it doesn't want to use it's left wing or the left wing is injured. This behavior was captured at Enkatala in Vikarabad district of Telangana state.

Tricolored munias, like many other small seed-eating birds, primarily feed on seeds. Their diet includes a variety of grass seeds, millet, and other small seeds. They can often be seen foraging on the ground in grassy areas, among shrubs, or around agricultural fields where seeds are abundant.

Their feeding behavior typically involves hopping around on the ground or low vegetation while pecking at seeds. They may also cling to grass stems or other plants to access seeds. Tricolored munias are often found in small flocks, especially during the non-breeding season, and they may feed together in loose groups.

Their feeding behavior is generally quick and agile, allowing them to efficiently locate and consume seeds. Overall, tricolored munias are adaptable birds when it comes to feeding and can be commonly observed in a variety of habitats across their range.

Baya Weaver Male Nest Building

Male Baya weavers are responsible for constructing the nests. They are highly skilled weavers and create intricate, flask-shaped nests made from grass, leaves, and thin twigs. The nests are woven using a complex interlocking pattern.

Male Baya weavers construct multiple nests within the colony to attract females. They perform elaborate nest-building displays, where they hang from the nest while fluttering their wings and calling out to attract females.

They usually build their nests in colonies, often near water bodies like lakes, ponds, or marshes. They prefer locations with tall trees or shrubs, providing them with a secure place to build their nests.

They often reuse their nests from previous breeding seasons. However, they require regular maintenance, and males spend significant time repairing and adding fresh material to the nests.

Barn Owl Feeding

A barn Owl feeding on a rodent. 

I got an opportunity to document a barn owl pair @lifeatwoods, shamshabad during Oct 2022 till Jan 2023.

During this period, I could capture this pair nesting, feeding chicks and other behaviour. The pair used to feed chicks with various types of rodents, bats, and swallow birds. 

This is one moment during that documentation.

Jowar crops, also known as sorghum, are tall, grassy plants cultivated for their grains. They have a distinctive appearance, with their dense clusters of grain heads atop sturdy stalks. In the early morning golden light, these fields of jowar would indeed take on a magical glow.

The sunlight filtering through the leaves of the jowar plants would create a mesmerizing play of light and shadow, casting golden hues across the landscape. The lush greenery of the crops would be bathed in warm, golden tones, enhancing the vibrant colors of the leaves and stems.

Against this backdrop, the baya weavers would stand out as they flit among the jowar plants, their bright plumage contrasting beautifully with the golden surroundings. Perhaps they are foraging for insects or seeds among the crops, their movements swift and precise as they dart in and out of the foliage.

The combination of the golden light, the lush greenery of the jowar fields, and the colorful presence of the baya weavers would create a scene of natural abundance and vitality. All Hornbills generally consume fruits without peeling them. They typically consume fruits whole and rely on their digestive systems to process the fruit. 

But at Narsapur forest in Telangana, I had the opportunity to record the behavior of an Indian Grey Hornbill peeling neem fruits before swallowing them. 

The peeling of neem fruits before consumption might suggest a level of food processing behavior that isn't widely documented for this species.

After digestion, they often excrete the seeds, which helps in seed dispersal. This behavior is beneficial for the neem tree as it aids in the propagation of its seeds.

By dropping and rinsing the eel multiple times, the tern appears to be improving its grip and preparing the fish for safe ingestion.

At one point, the tern attempts to swallow the eel but regurgitates it soon after, possibly because it was not properly aligned or still too slippery. It then resumes the cleaning process before finally managing to swallow the eel. Such handling behavior highlights the bird’s instinctive problem-solving and prey-processing strategies.
