Keeping Your Voice When AI Writes the First Draft Readers can tell. Not always, not reliably, but often enough that it matters, and the tell is rarely a single phrase they could point to.
It is a flatness. Everything is competent, nothing is surprising, the sentences are all roughly the same length, every point is balanced against a counterpoint, and by the third paragraph the reader has stopped expecting to encounter anything they did not already assume.
If people follow you because of how you think, that flatness is expensive. Here is how to use these tools heavily without producing it.
Why the flatness happens The model generates the most plausible continuation. Across an entire piece, that means it converges on the average of everything ever written about your topic.
Average is by definition unremarkable. It also has predictable properties: hedged claims, balanced structures, three-item lists, transitional phrases that connect without asserting, and a strong pull toward summarising rather than concluding.
None of these are errors. They are the statistical centre. And the statistical centre is precisely where your voice is not.
The editing passes that fix it Six passes. Not all six on everything, but the first three on anything with your name on it.
Pass one: reinstate the specifics. Generated text is abstract by default. Go through and replace every general statement with something concrete from your actual experience. "Teams often struggle with handoffs" becomes the actual handoff that went wrong, at the actual company, with the actual consequence.
This one pass does more than the other five combined. Specificity is the thing models cannot supply, because your specifics were never in the training data.
Pass two: break the rhythm. Read a paragraph aloud. If every sentence is fifteen to twenty words, the flatness is coming from there. Cut one to four words. Let another run long. Human prose is uneven, and the unevenness is part of what makes it sound like a person.
Pass three: commit to something. Find the hedges and decide whether you actually believe the stronger version. "This can sometimes be an effective approach" usually means "this works" or "this rarely works," and you know which. Say it.
Models hedge because hedging is safe and common in the training material. You hedge when you are genuinely uncertain. Those should produce different amounts of hedging.
Pass four: cut the connective tissue. Delete the sentences that only exist to link two other sentences. Generated text has a lot of these. Most paragraphs survive losing their first sentence entirely.
Pass five: put the odd thing back. The aside. The joke that only works if you know the field. The reference to something you are irritated by. These are exactly what the averaging process removes, and exactly what makes a reader feel they are hearing from someone.
Pass six: check the opening and closing. Openings tend toward throat-clearing and closings tend toward summary. Both are weak positions. Your first line should carry content, and your last should land rather than recap.
The upstream fix Editing catches a lot. Briefing well prevents more.
Give the model your own writing. Several thousand words of something you wrote, with an instruction to match the voice, produces output dramatically closer to yours than any description of tone could. Showing beats describing, and it is not close.
Give it your actual position before asking it to write. If you tell it what you think, it writes toward your view. If you ask it what to think, you get the average view, and no amount of editing rescues a piece that was never yours.
Give it constraints that force character. Ban a list of words you would never use. Specify a reading level. Require a concrete example in every section. Constraints push output away from the centre, which is where you want it.

What to write yourself Some things should not go through the tool at all.
The opening paragraph. Set the voice yourself, then let it continue in that register. Starting cold produces a generic opening that colours everything after it.
Anything where you are the evidence. Your own experience, your own mistakes, your own results. These are the parts readers come for and the parts a model can only approximate.
The strong claim. If a piece has one assertion that matters, write that sentence yourself. It is the load-bearing element and you should not delegate it.
The honest trade Writing entirely yourself will usually produce a better piece than writing with AI and editing carefully.
That is worth admitting rather than pretending otherwise. The reason to use these tools is not that they produce better writing. It is that they let you produce four pieces where you would have produced one, at a quality high enough that the difference does not cost you readers.
For most creators and small teams that trade is clearly worth making. But it is a trade, and going in aware of it leads to better decisions about which pieces get the full treatment and which get the fast one.
The failure mode is forgetting there is a trade at all, publishing the unedited average version, and wondering why engagement drifted down over six months without any single piece being obviously bad.
The test Read it back and ask whether anyone else could have written it.
If yes, it needs another pass. Not because it is bad, but because interchangeable is the one thing your writing cannot afford to be.
Your voice is the asset. The tool is there to help you produce more of it, and it only does that if the voice survives the process.
