India's AI Rise: How Talent, Startups, and Policy Are Reshaping Global AI Development
India's AI Talent Engine India's biggest AI advantage isn't infrastructure or capital — it's people. The country now has the world's second-largest population of AI researchers and inventors, behind only the United States, according to talent-analytics firm Zeki as cited in Stanford's 2026 AI Index. On LinkedIn's AI skill-penetration index, India ranks first globally, meaning AI skills show up in Indian professional profiles roughly three times the world average. Add a fast-growing base of over 20 million GitHub developers, and you get a pipeline few countries can match.
Startups and Product Innovation Indian AI startups are moving from experimentation to deployment. A Bain & Company survey (with Microsoft and IAMAI) found roughly 80% of Indian enterprises already have at least one AI model in production, with technology providers embedding AI/ML into products at a higher rate than global peers. Sectors like fintech, SaaS, and communications are leading adoption, and India's cost-effective, cloud-native engineering culture has made it a hub for building and scaling AI tools rather than just consuming them.
Government and Industry Push Policy has caught up with momentum. The IndiaAI Mission, run by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, is funding compute infrastructure, datasets, and large-scale skilling programs, while the National Education Policy 2020 pushes AI into university curricula. NASSCOM-led skilling platforms have trained over a million learners in AI-adjacent skills. This culminated in India hosting the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, drawing leaders from over 80 countries — a signal of how central India now considers itself to global AI development.
Putting the "40%" Figure in Context The claim that India contributes "40%" of global AI R&D doesn't hold up against primary data, and readers should treat it skeptically. What credible sources actually show is more specific and more modest: India accounted for roughly 20–24% of GitHub AI project contributions in recent years (Stanford AI Index), and about 16% of the global AI talent pool per Bain & Company's 2022 study — figures that themselves vary by methodology (an IIM Ahmedabad–BCG study put India's share of AI professionals at just 4.5%). India is unambiguously a top-two or top-three contributor by talent and developer activity, but no major index attributes 40% of overall AI research output to any single country outside the US and China combined.
The Road Ahead India's challenge now is retention, not talent creation. Stanford's 2026 Index flagged India's AI talent outflow as the steepest of any country tracked, and India's private-sector R&D spending still trails advanced economies. Converting talent density into sustained research leadership — not just adoption and skilling — will determine whether India's AI story matches its ambition.

Everything AI

China Resists Anthropic's OpenAI's and Elon Musk Attempts to Wage a Silent AI Cold War
What a "Silent AI Cold War" Would Mean Unlike the ideological standoff of the 20th century, a "silent" AI cold war plays out through semiconductors, frontier models, research talent, and technical standards rather than open confrontation. The contest centers heavily on the AI hardware stack, especially semiconductors, with Nvidia currently dominant while Huawei stands as China's most credible domestic challenger. Analysts increasingly describe this as a race measured in chip export controls, compute stockpiles, and dominance over software ecosystems, with major strategic and economic stakes attached to whichever side leads.
Washington's Push to Slow Down, Without Standing Down In mid-September 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging AI firms to deliberately slow the pace of frontier capability gains, warning that unchecked progress risks outrunning humanity's ability to understand or govern it. OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI backer Elon Musk both publicly endorsed the idea, though none called for halting development outright. Notably, Amodei's proposal also pushed for tighter U.S. chip export controls on China and a crackdown on "distillation," the practice of training rival models on American systems' outputs. President Trump dismissed the safety warnings, framing AI leadership as a contest the U.S. must win outright.
Beijing Rejects the Framing China's government pushed back firmly. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said AI development "bears on the common well-being of all humanity" and called for open, inclusive cooperation rather than externally imposed limits. State-backed Global Times went further, calling the slowdown push a "Cold War playbook" aimed at China, while China's state security minister separately called AI the main battleground of global technological competition and urged faster domestic risk-control systems. Notably, neither statement suggested Chinese firms intend to moderate their own pace of development.
Chips Remain the Contest's Core Battleground Washington and its allies have progressively tightened export controls on advanced chips since 2022 to preserve U.S. leadership in AI and supercomputing. China has responded with an aggressive push to build domestic chip capability and cut reliance on foreign suppliers. Research from CSIS suggests these controls have real but limited effect: they can't substitute for comprehensive industrial policy, and may even be pushing China's heavily subsidized chip sector toward breakthroughs that could destabilize the current balance.
Implications for Global AI Governance Even Amodei has conceded that securing Chinese cooperation is the "toughest dilemma" for any agreement to pace AI progress, given the military and economic incentives to pull ahead. With U.S. private AI investment vastly outpacing China's in 2025, according to Stanford's AI Index, and no binding international safety framework in sight, the standoff leaves global AI governance fragmented, meaning any single company's or country's safety pledges may carry little weight without matching commitments from rivals.

The First Thirty Days: What One Team Actually Did
A marketing team of six. One head of marketing, two content people, a designer, a demand-gen specialist, a coordinator. Mid-size B2B software company. No AI budget, no mandate, no training programme.
What follows is the shape a successful first month tends to take, told as one team's arc.
Week one: experiment, with nothing at stake The head of marketing set one rule for the first week. Everybody tries one low-stakes task each day. Nothing that goes to a customer. Nothing on a deadline.
Summarise an article you were going to read anyway. Draft an internal note. Ask it to explain something you half understand. Rewrite a paragraph you are unhappy with.
The point was not output. It was calibration. Getting a feel for what the tool does well, where it goes vague, how it responds when you push back.
Two things surfaced by Friday, both common.
The designer discovered it was useful for something nobody had suggested: turning her rough verbal concept into a written brief she could hand to a freelancer. Not a design task at all. A translation task she had always found tedious.
The coordinator concluded it was useless, because she had asked it factual questions about the company's own product and got confident, wrong answers. That reaction is extremely common in week one and it is worth naming, because whether it gets addressed largely determines whether that person ever engages again.
Week two: apply it to something real The instruction for week two was narrower. Take one recurring task that is actually yours, apply the tool deliberately, and compare the result to how you would normally have done it.
The two content people picked repurposing: taking a long piece and producing the social posts, the email, and the short abstract. Previously half a day. It became roughly ninety minutes, most of which was editing rather than writing.
The demand-gen specialist picked headline variations. Ten options instead of the two she usually managed, which changed what got tested rather than how long testing took.
The coordinator, prompted by the head of marketing, tried again with a different framing: instead of asking about the product, she gave it the product documentation and asked questions about the text. It worked. That reframing is often the whole unlock for someone who wrote the tool off early.
This was also the week they started using a structure for prompts rather than typing whatever came to mind. Context, the role to take, the exact task, the format wanted, the constraints. The improvement was immediate enough that nobody had to be persuaded twice.
Week three: stop accepting the first draft Week three was about a habit that does not come naturally.
Most people take the first output, decide it is adequate, and edit it themselves. The team's rule for the week was to push back at least twice before touching anything manually.
Too formal. Tighten the second section. You assumed something I did not tell you. Give me three versions of the opening.
The quality difference surprised them, and it is the most consistently underestimated part of using these tools. The first output is raw material. Two or three rounds of direction produce something substantially closer to finished.
They also started keeping the prompts that worked. A shared document, nothing formal, just the ones worth reusing.
Week four: turn it into a system The final week converted individual practice into something the team owned.
They picked their three best prompts and wrote them up properly, with instructions on what to substitute. The content repurposing prompt. The headline generation prompt. The brief-from-rough-notes prompt the designer had found.
They also wrote down the things that did not work, which turned out to be as valuable. Do not ask it for product specifics. Do not use it for the monthly numbers. Do not let it near anything with customer names unless anonymised.
Where they were at day thirty Three reusable prompts. One workflow, the repurposing, that was noticeably faster and had become the default way that work got done. Six people who could write a reasonable prompt.
Not transformed. Better, in specific places, with a habit forming.
That is what a good first month looks like, and the gap between it and the version people expect is worth stating plainly. Nobody's job changed. No headcount moved. One recurring task got meaningfully faster and a few others got easier.
What made it work Four things, and none of them were about the tool.
Low stakes first. A week of consequence-free experimentation meant the early failures happened where they did not matter. Teams that start on real deliverables get burned in week one and retreat.
One recurring task each. Recurring is the operative word. Value compounds on things done weekly, not on impressive one-offs.
The second attempt for the sceptic. The coordinator would have written it off permanently. One reframing changed that. In most teams somebody has this experience, and whether anyone follows up determines whether they participate.
Writing down what worked. Three documented prompts are worth more than thirty undocumented ones, because they survive the person who wrote them going on holiday.
The checkpoint worth using At day thirty, two questions.
Do you have at least three prompts you would reuse? Is there at least one task that is noticeably faster than it was?
Two yeses means it is working. Keep going, and the next month is about spreading what already works rather than finding new things.
Two noes is informative rather than damning. Usually it means the tasks chosen were one-offs rather than recurring, or that nobody got past accepting the first draft.

Everything AI - beyond the hype

The most effective rollouts rarely begin with a strategy - they begin with somebody being annoyed.
The Team That Started With One Tedious Task
A four-person customer support team at a logistics company. Every Friday afternoon, someone spent two hours reading the week's tickets and writing a summary for the operations lead: what broke, what customers complained about, what is recurring.
Nobody enjoyed it. It was genuinely useful, which is why it survived, and it consumed the worst two hours of the week.
Why this was the right first task Not because it was important. It was not, particularly. It was the right first task because of its shape.
It recurred. Every week, reliably. Any improvement compounded rather than being a one-off win.
All the information was already there. The tickets contained everything needed. Nothing had to be looked up, remembered or invented. Text in, text out.
Somebody knew what good looked like. The person who had written it forty times could tell immediately whether a generated version was right, which meant errors would be caught rather than shipped.
Failure was cheap. A bad summary meant twenty wasted minutes, not an unhappy customer.
That combination is the profile of a good starting point, and it is worth checking against before picking anything.
What they did Exported the week's tickets. Stripped customer names and account numbers, replacing them with placeholders. Pasted the text in with a prompt asking for themes, with the number of tickets in each, and a representative example for each theme quoted directly from the source.
The first attempt was mediocre. It produced sensible categories that were too broad to act on. "Delivery issues" covered forty percent of tickets and told the operations lead nothing he did not know.
The fix was one sentence added to the prompt: no category may cover more than fifteen percent of tickets, split broader ones into specific causes.
That produced something genuinely better than the human version had been. "Delivery issues" became four distinct causes, one of which nobody had noticed as a pattern because it had never been counted.
The unexpected part The time saving was real: two hours became about twenty-five minutes, most of it checking.
But the thing that mattered more was that the summary got better. A person reading two hundred tickets holds impressions. A systematic pass counts them. The team had been reporting what felt significant, which is not the same as what was frequent.
Within two months the operations lead was making routing decisions off that summary. It had gone from an obligation to an input.
This pattern recurs often enough to be worth expecting. The initial justification for automating a task is time. The durable value frequently turns out to be that the task is now done more thoroughly than a person under time pressure ever did it.
What they did next Nothing, for six weeks. They ran the same workflow, refined the prompt twice, and left it alone.
Then a second task, chosen on the same criteria: recurring, all information present, someone able to judge the output, cheap to get wrong. Converting resolved tickets into knowledge base articles.
Two workflows, after four months. Both reliable, both documented, both still checked by a person before anything went out.
Why the slow pace was right The temptation after a success is to apply it everywhere at once. That is how rollouts fail.
Six weeks of running one workflow surfaced the edge cases: the weeks with unusual ticket volumes, the categories that needed adjusting, the occasions the model over-summarised and lost something. All of that learning transferred to the second workflow and made it faster to get right.
A team that had launched five workflows simultaneously would have had five half-working processes and no clear sense of which problems belonged to which.
The transferable bit Ask your team one question: what is the most tedious text-based thing on your plate?
The answers will be unglamorous. Nobody nominates a strategic initiative. They nominate the weekly summary, the meeting notes, the categorising, the reformatting.
Those unglamorous answers are usually the right place to start, because tedium is a reliable signal that a task is repetitive, well understood, and low risk. Which is the exact profile of work these tools handle well.

NVIDIA Adds a Hardware Watchdog to Keep AI Agents in Bounds
What NVIDIA announced NVIDIA announced its Open Agent Safety Platform on September 28, 2026, combining the open-source OpenShell agent runtime with an optional hardware enforcement layer called NVIDIA Sentry. The target is autonomous AI agents, not AI models in general. The launch lands at a tense moment. NVIDIA says the system would have prevented the recent high-profile breach of Hugging Face by OpenAI's AI models. That's the company's own claim, and nobody has tested it independently. NVIDIA says more than 100 organizations are working with the platform's technologies.
Layer one: OpenShell, the software boundary OpenShell (Apache 2.0) is an open source secure runtime for executing autonomous AI agents in sandboxed environments with kernel-level isolation. It runs each agent in a sandbox, converts the operator's instructions into a verifiable policy, checks those limits before the agent starts, and keeps enforcing them while it works. Every allow and deny decision gets logged for audit, and before a policy change is approved, OpenShell uses formal verification to flag risky new access, such as reaching a new host with credentials, so those changes wait for human review. It supports agents such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, GitHub Copilot CLI, and OpenClaw. OpenShell isn't brand new. NVIDIA first announced it in March.
Layer two: Sentry, the hardware watchdog Sentry is an out-of-band watchdog that runs on NVIDIA BlueField-4 DPUs to continuously monitor agent behavior. If an AI agent attempts to move outside its software boundary, Sentry quarantines and stops it in milliseconds. The separation is the point. Placing Sentry on a separate processor, rather than on the CPU or GPU where the agent operates, gives it an isolated view of the agent's activity. In a Vera Rubin POD, each compute tray's BlueField-4 sits on the node's only path to the model. Put together, the chain looks like this. OpenShell sets and enforces the rules from inside the host, and Sentry watches from outside it. Sentry's monitoring and enforcement stay operational even if the host or workload is compromised. It relies on NVIDIA DOCA to correlate agent interactions, policy decisions, and tool access.
Integration and who it's for The complete design is optimized for NVIDIA Vera CPU and BlueField DPU-based systems, and also compatible with other hardware. OpenShell works on its own. It can run on supported local, on-premises, cloud, and Kubernetes infrastructure without BlueField-4. The early partners are mostly enterprise. Anthropic's Claude Managed Agents use OpenShell and BlueField integrations to enforce sandbox access control. Canonical, SUSE and Red Hat are integrating the platform into their operating systems, and infrastructure partners include CoreWeave, Nebius, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Together AI. SAP is embedding OpenShell inside its Joule Studio runtime.
Limitations and open questions The two halves are at very different stages. OpenShell is broadly available through NVIDIA's developer site and GitHub, while Sentry is published as a reference design for partners to turn into products. Analysts at Moor Insights & Strategy note that OpenShell ships as version 0.1.0 and that Sentry has no availability date yet. Pricing isn't confirmed. The performance claims haven't been checked either. No independent benchmark has verified the millisecond quarantine, and detection latency and false-positive rates hadn't appeared in independent evaluations as of launch. Then there's cost. Customers who want both layers of protection will be buying NVIDIA silicon.
